Abstract
Introduction: Patients with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Disorders are facing to several Psychological stresses throughout their life.
This study is designed to assess the prevalence of depression in this group of patients in the Hemophilia Center of Imam Khomeini hospital ,Tehran, Iran.
Method: A descriptive study done by simple sampling on 120 patients over 15 years old attending to hemophilia center of Imam Khomeini hospital, Tehran from May to September 2006.
A questionnaire was designed, containing demographic and clinical data about patients and standardized 21 questions of Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI).
Results: The prevalence of depression was 60.8%: mild depression 20.1%, moderate depression 29.1% and severe depression 12.6%. Among demographic variables, occupation and place of residency had significant correlation with depression; And among clinical variables, level of coagulation factors and frequency of joint bleeding had significant correlation with depression (P< 0.05).
Discussion and conclusion: The results of this study shows that depression in this group of patients correlated to decline in the occupational and social situation, unavailability of neighboring therapeutic center and complications of disease; So, construction of a consultation system to deal with their psychological problems, more readily available therapeutic cares and optimal social support could have an important impact on their psycho-somatic health.
